BANGALORE: Good monsoon this year means more incidents of fire the following summer! Good rains help grass and other natural vegetation grow in vacant plots. During summer these dry up, increasing the chances of fire. This April, Bangalore had 145 incidents of fire, the highest for the month in the last four summers.Records are telling. Bangalore has always recorded more fire accidents during the months of March, April and May.
As many as 375 incidents were reported in 2004, 362 in 2005, 304 in 2006.
During March and April 2007, the city recorded 257 incidents, which is way ahead of the average number of incidents in other months.Explains B G Chengappa, joint director (fire and emergency services): "If it rains well this year, then we need to be on the alert the following summer. Vegetation dries up, increasing the number of fires."Besides extinguishing the lives of people, fires engulf property worth hundreds of crores every year. According to fire force department statistics, property worth around Rs 600 crore was destroyed in 2002 — the highest in the last five years.Besides dry natural vegetation, lightening strikes also contribute to the fire. "Most of the fires are preventable. The external ones are more during summer. Create a safety zone around your home by clearing flammable vegetation. Keep your roof clean of leaves. Do not throw lit-up match sticks or unextinguished cigarettes," says fire force DIG T Suneel Kumar.
